Editing and Cloning Templates

Editing a Template

If you need to change an existing template — fix a typo, update the message, or change buttons — use the Edit feature.

How to edit:

  1. Go to the Templates listing page
  2. Find the template you want to change
  3. Click the Edit icon (pencil icon) on that template
  4. The template editor opens with all fields already filled in
  5. Make your changes
  6. Click Update Template to save

1. From the Templates listing, click the Edit (pencil) icon on any template
2. Capture the full Edit Template page showing pre-filled Basic Info, Components, and the Update Template button
Save to: static/img/screenshots/templates/editing-and-cloning/edit-template-page.png

What you can change:

  • Template name
  • Category
  • Language
  • Body text and variables
  • Header, footer, and buttons
  • Media (images, videos, documents)
Keep in mind

Editing a template resubmits it to WhatsApp for review. The status may change back to Pending until WhatsApp re-approves it. During this time, the template cannot be used for sending messages.

Cloning a Template

Cloning creates a copy of an existing template. This is useful when:

  • You want the same template in a different language
  • You want a slightly different version of an existing template
  • You want to reuse a template's structure but change the content

How to clone:

  1. Go to the Templates listing page
  2. Find the template you want to copy
  3. Click the Clone icon on that template
  4. The editor opens with all fields copied from the original
  5. The name will have _copy added to it — change it to something meaningful
  6. Make any other changes (language, text, etc.)
  7. Click Clone Template to save as a new template

2. Capture the Clone Template page showing the name with _copy suffix and all copied fields
Save to: static/img/screenshots/templates/editing-and-cloning/clone-template-page.png

What happens when you clone:

  • A brand new template is created (the original stays untouched)
  • The new template goes through WhatsApp review as a fresh submission
  • It starts with Pending status

Example use case:

You have order_confirmation in English and want to create a Hindi version:

  1. Clone order_confirmation
  2. Change the name to order_confirmation_hindi
  3. Change the language to Hindi
  4. Translate the body text to Hindi
  5. Click Clone Template
tip

Cloning is much faster than creating from scratch when you want multiple versions of the same template.
